The Selfish Giant
The touring educational program will center upon female Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad’s new opera The Selfish Giant . Adapted from a short story by Oscar Wilde, the work addresses themes of empathy, compassion and togetherness as the selfish giant learns to share his garden with neighboring children. Opera is not currently included in the offerings of area organizations providing schools with teaching artists.
In-school previews have always been part of BOU’s effort to develop future audiences, but this year we are launching a program with a curriculum meeting NYS arts standards prepared by a certified educator for use by participating schools. Lessons include an introduction to opera, how composer and librettist work together, what it takes to mount a production, and the Oscar Wilde story on which The Selfish Giant is based. As a capstone, BOU will perform the opera at each school during school hours with a guided talk-back between artists and students. In-school performances will take place in the spring of 2025.
Admission is free and open to the public. Keep an eye out for future announcements including time, dates and locations.
